Anna left at dawn.
She entered the Martian desert, all alone.
Where is she going?
What secret is she hiding?

Thirty years after the Mars exploration mission Hera, whose crew died in mysterious circumstances, the ensuing political issues that slowed NASA’s race to conquer space have finally ended. This time the five members of the new Isis mission will not travel the 400 million kilometres for a short visit. This time they are destined to become the first colonisers of the Red Planet.

The science fiction series “Red Desert”, set in the near future, includes four books.
The first one, “Point of No Return”, is a novella.

In what looks like a suicide attempt, Swedish exobiologist Anna Persson, crew member of the Isis, secretly leaves Station Alpha at the crack of dawn to travel deep into the Martian desert in a pressurised rover.
As she journeys to the limit of her two day oxygen supply, she shows us memories of events from her past leading up to the mission. Little by little, as time and oxygen run out, she reveals the real Anna.
Whatever her goal, wherever it is, will Anna reach her destination?

The second book is “Red Desert - People of Mars” (a novel).

Red Desert Point of No Return eBook Rita Carla Francesca Monticelli

First of all, this was a fun story. I'd describe this as realistic science fiction because the mission itself seems plausible. Adding to the realism are scenes from the characters past that give you a glimpse into the psychological ambition of the main character. She makes decisions that I probably wouldn't make, but somebody with her past probably would. I know that characters are often one-dimensional in a lot of scifi, but not in Red Desert. Since we get to know their past, they are intriguing, especially Anna. I also liked the dialogue, some of which was like being a fly on the wall hearing very private conversations. In the front of the book, the author warns that it is written in British English, but I only noticed a couple of instances, none of which hurt the flow of the text (for example, the use of "torch" instead of flashlight.) This was the first series-based scifi book I've read, so I look forward to seeing how it all works out in the next Red Desert book.

Godo but for time management within the novel
13 June 2015 Just finished reading "Red Desert Point of No Return". Was not disappointed. Great story! )
Well, i thought this book was very interesting and I was really surprised and upset when it ended. I hadn't realised that I had got a book with so few pages.
Such a great mystery/adventure with a touch of intriguing romance. Awesome character development, with lots of twists and turns. It's translated to English from Italian, so the translation is a really fun way to read this book for sure, it's really well done, but not typical American English which adds to the charm of this story. And it's really fun to read about Mars and the science behind living there. READ IT!!! YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!! Go ahead and purchase the whole series now, you'll be so happy that you did. Plus, the author has a Mars Science Fiction facebook page that is really fun to interact on.
While not an Asimov, Bradbury, Pohl, or Herbert, the book is well written and keeps your attention. I believe there is an edition coming to English soon that will contain all 4 books in the series, but this way you can check Rita out inexpensively. There are good twists, but some are a bit predictable, and I found the flash-backs a bit confusing (Oh, this is a flash-back). All-in-all an enjoyable quick diversion from the burdens of the day. I did immediately download book 2. I also enjoyed her "the Mentor" thriller (I read it first and decided to try her science fiction too).
I had a very good time reading this novella. Of course Mars is one heck of a setting, but beyond that the narrative was quite riveting. If I were to have one complaint it would be that this could easily have been a full novel as many questions were left unanswered. I understand this is to be a series and so I've little doubt that everything will be addressed in due time but I'd like more now. I'm impatient like that.

All that aside, this was very good with a complicated protagonist and bountiful subplots, all deftly laid out in truncated form. I'll be sure to grab the next in the series, which is tentatively scheduled for release in September, I believe.
Point Of No Return, a hard science fiction novel written by Italian Author Rita Carla Francesca Monticelli, was first published in English in 2014. It is the first book of a four part series entitled Deserto Rosso or Red Desert and was previously available only in Italian. The remaining novels will be released in English starting in September of 2014.

Set in the first person, the narrator is Anna Persson, an astronaut living on Mars an indeterminate number of years in the future. She is a member of a Mars settlement established thirty years after the failure of a previous attempt so one might guess the date to be fifty or so years in the future.

This is a non-linear story. There are several timeframes, conflicts and plotlines established during the story one in the moment of the narrative, as well as three set in Anna's past which we view through recollections she has while driving across the Martian terrain on a mission unclear.

First is her long term romance with Jan, a man she met by accident on a city street in Europe. She learns after a month that he is married but estranged from his wife and is angry with him for not telling her sooner. The irony in the situation later becomes clear when he learns after nearly three years, that her mission to Mars is one way.

Another plot-line concerns her astronaut selection and training. Anna is a biologist and we gather a bit of a star in her field, so the managers of the program regard recruiting her as a plum. During her training she meets her future crew-mates as well as a back-up man named Hassan, whom she dislikes immediately. Anna chalks up her dislike of him as prejudice, but as the story develops, the reader will begin to wonder.

The last plot-line she recalls is an ill fated meeting with her father, who abandoned her mother before Anna was born. Because of the abandonment, Anna despises her father and her Arabic heritage, which would account for the prejudice against Hassan. She tracks her father down just before she is to leave for Mars and confronts him. He has a family of his own and does not welcome the intrusion by the daughter he abandoned. The meeting does not go well.

In the present action of the story, Anna is approaching the great canyon known as Valles Marinaris. This story while placed in a hard science fiction setting, is also a combination mystery and thriller. The author's style is spare and keeps the reader on the subject at hand. A novella, the book is more of a prologue to the stories that follow than a complete book in itself. Ms. Monticelli has established several problems for our protagonist and I trust those problems will be resolved in the future volumes of the Red Desert series and I am looking forward to reading them. At 99 cents, this story is a bargain.
